Busy Week!

This upcoming week will be a busy week in our classroom! Tuesday is technically our 49th day of school, but we will be celebrating our 50th day of school early by having a "50's" day. Students are encouraged to dress like people dressed in the 50's. Please do not feel like you have to go out and buy an outfit, be creative with clothes you already have! We will celebrate at school that day by participating in many different activities, both in our classroom and with the entire school.

Friday is Halloween. Students do NOT need to wear costumes. We will celebrate in the afternoon by switching around with the other kindergarten classrooms and participating in different games and crafts in each room. We will end the day with a special snack and activity in our own classroom.

If you have any questions, please let me know!

Letter of the week: S
Next week's letter: P
Sight word: Like
Next week's sight word: A (pronounced "uh")

On Fridays we have been taking a little sight word test. We practice all week writing the words and on Friday we take a little test to see if we can write the words without looking at our Word Wall or listening to our Sight Word Songs. This isn't graded, but I do give out a little treat if the students can write them correctly. If you would like to work at home on writing these, our sight words we've learned so far are: am, can, I, like, the, and we.

Silly Sock Day!

Tomorrow will be Silly Sock Day! Wear your silliest socks to end our week of learning about the letter S.

The vocabulary words learned this week were: eager, assortment, passenger, and pedestrian. Students were struggling with remembering pedestrian, so if you could use it at home, this may help them to remember the word!! Thanks!

Early Out, Favorite Team Day, and Homecoming!

This Wednesday is our first early dismissal. Students who ride the bus will head down to the bus around 1:15 or 1:20 and as soon as they are out of the hallway, the doors will be unlocked for students who will be picked up.

In honor of Homecoming this week, the elementary will be having a Favorite Team Day on Thursday. Students are encouraged to wear something that shows their favorite team (shirt, jersey, sweatshirt, etc.).

Friday is Homecoming and the Homecoming Parade. You should have received a red note on Friday explaining about the parade. If you have any further questions, please let me know!

Schedule Revision

This week we were informed that on Early Dismissal days, we will not have specials and will only have recess. This means the "day" will become an ED day and the numbered or lettered day will be moved to the following day.

For example, this week Wednesday is an ED day and Friday will also be an ED because of the Homecoming Parade. Therefore, Monday will be Day 3, Tuesday will be Day A, Wednesday will be an ED Day, Thursday will then be Day 4, Friday will be another ED Day and next Monday will be Day 5.

If there is an early out, the numbered or letter day will be moved to the following day, just like we do for snow days. I will try to send home a revised Specials Schedule for the month on Monday.

Letters, Sight Words, Vocabulary Update

This coming week will be a review week for letters and sight words. The letters that will be reviewed are M and A. Sight words that will be reviewed are I, we, can, the, and am.

Vocabulary words from last week were soar, snooze, drowsy, and tangled.

Library

I've been meaning to let you know when we will be going to the school library each week to check out books. We will go to the school library on Mondays and Thursdays. Thursday, Mrs. Cabeen also reads to us before we check out a new book. If you forget to send your library book one of the days, no worries! They usually aren't due back to the library until about a week after checkout. Notes will be sent home when books are overdue.

Homecoming Parade

Homecoming and the Homecoming Parade is next Friday (September 19). Students will go to the parade Friday afternoon. If you would like to take your child to the parade, you may do so, but you must pick your child up by 1. Please also send a note. If you do not pick your child up, we will travel together on buses to go to and attend the parade. Students may NOT be picked up at the parade. You must pick them up before the parade OR pick them up at school immediately following the parade. If your child rides a bus, they will just ride the bus home after the parade as usual.

Specials Schedule

Our special schedule is as follows:

Day 1- Art
Day 2- PE
Day 3- Music
Day A- STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) and Music
Day 4- Computer
Day 5- PE
Day 6- Music
Day B- Guidance and PE

Tomorrow (Sept. 8) is Day 5.

If there ever is a snow day, the "day" will just be moved until we return to school. Example: If we have a snow day on January 5 and that is supposed to be a Day 2, it will then be Day 2 when we return to school on January 6.

Math Homework and Paper Sight Word Books

Your child will be sent home with their first piece of homework on Monday, September 8. It will be due by Thursday, September 11. I will always send home the Math homework  worksheet on Monday and it will always be due by Thursday. When your child brings it back, I check it, return it home, and your child receives a small reward. I do not keep track of how your child scores on the homework. I do this to get students in the habit of doing and bringing back homework to prepare them for future grades. The homework also gives them extra practice on what we are working on in Math.

You also may have noticed a short paper sight word book coming home with your child. Each week, after your child has learned and worked on identifying and recognizing the sight word of the week, there is a paper sight word book that they practice reading and then read to me. These are good to save and practice with your child. It helps them to remember sight words and learn to recognize them in text.

Letter, Sight Word, and Vocabulary Update

The letter for this coming week is Aa. We will also be learning the sight word "the." Last week we worked on Mm and the sight word "we." We also reviewed sight words "can" and "I."

The vocabulary words we learned at the end of last week were generous, nuisance, energetic, and exhausted.

Working on letter names/sounds and sight words at home is always a great idea! Trying to use our vocabulary words when talking with your child is also helpful for them so they start remembering and using the words.

Letters, Sight Words, Vocabulary Words

This week we have been reviewing all the letters in the alphabet. We've talked about what their name is and what sound they make. Next week we will begin focusing on just one letter in depth to learn the sound it makes, both at the beginning, and at the end of words. Each week, we will go over one or two letters. The first few months, we will just go over one letter each week. Next week, we will be focusing on the letter Mm.

Each week, students will also learn a new sight word and usually around four vocabulary words.

Sight words are taught so that students learn to recognize the words right away in reading without having to sound them out. When you are working at home with your child on sight words, try not to have them sound the words out. Just put them on a flash card and go through each word. If they miss it, tell them what the word is, have them look at it and say it, and then move on. The sight words we learned this week were the words "I" and the word "can." Next week, we will learn the word "we."

Vocabulary words are taught after we've read our story for the week. The words taught are usually in the story, or are words that tie in with the story. Students will not be tested over these words, but we will review them so the students can start using them when they are talking and then they can eventually use them in their writing. This week,  the vocabulary words we learned were creature, companion, explore, and imitate. I told the kiddos to use one of the words at home with you, I'm hoping most of them have done this!! I will post next week's vocabulary words after they learn them!
